Last year, The Civic Circle's first public event was a Celebrate Democracy Concert, and we had so much fun that we decided to make a concert part of our annual offering.
This year's Democracy Rocks Concert took place at El Golfo, a wonderful restaurant in Silver Spring that shared 20 percent of the proceeds. We collaborated with Liberty's Promise, another civic education group that focuses principally on high school students.
Teaching artist Lea Morris (LEA) visited Northwood High School students in the Liberty's Promise program, and helped them write an original song titled "Dreams" about what it means to them to be an American.
Lea and fellow teaching artist Nick Newlin also performed a half-hour version of our assembly show, "Vote for Me!" which has evolved considerably since we first showcased it last year. Finally Lea and Nick also shared several songs suitable to our democracy theme, with lots of audience participation.
Big thanks to El Golfo and Liberty's Promise for working with The Civic Circle to make democracy rock. Here are some fun photos from the event.
