The Power of Student-to-Student Learning

Students in Grades 3-5 at Weller Road and Wheaton Woods Elementary Schools spent the spring writing civic songs with teaching artists Munit Mesfin and Gabrielle Zwi, then performed those songs for younger students (ranging from Pre-K to 2nd grade) at their schools.

The younger kids loved watching their older peers perform, and the older students took great pride in sharing the songs that they wrote. Here's a snippet from one of the Weller Road students' songs, titled "Join."

Let's join together and have some fun
With lots of people we can help a ton
Let's all come together and act as one
It feels so great to help someone

This type of student-to-student learning is emerging as a promising model in Civic Circle workshops, and we hope to do even more of it in the future.
