The Civic Circle was thrilled to bring a summer concert of patriotic songs to more than 80 elementary school students at the Horizons Greater Washington Summer Program on July 16th.
Our “Happy Birthday, America!” concert featured a powerhouse lineup of talented children’s performers:
Lea Morris invited students to take seven “steps to democracy” with The Citizen Tango, and performed our civility and news literacy songs (“Listen!” and “Whisper Down the Lane.”)
Uasuf Gueye got the kids throwing their arms in the air to shout “Vote” on his song about how and why we cast our ballots, “Democracy.”
Bomani Armah shared a trio of civic hip-hop poems, including two that celebrated the life and teachings of Frederick Douglass.
Nick Newlin got kids moving and singing along on “Listen!” and “Vote for Me!,” added Civic Circle verses to a medley of favorite American singalong songs, and kept the morning sparkling as chief Master of Ceremonies and emcee.
Thank you, Horizons, for this opportunity, and thank you Lea, Uasuf, Bomani and Nick for creating such a lively democracy performance for the youth.
