IT’S THE SEASON TO GIVE THANKS, and The Civic Circle expresses gratitude to all the many individual donors, sponsors, and collaborators who make it possible for us to bring high-quality civic arts programs to students in our region. Together, we are advancing literacy, social and emotional and civic skills, and empowering students to engage in democracy and in their communities. Thank you!
IF YOU’RE LOOKING for gratitude and inspiration yourself, you’ll find it at The Civic Circle’s “Voices of Hope: Inspiring Democracy” celebration on Sunday, December 8 in downtown Silver Spring. Montgomery County Council Vice President Kate Stewart will engage in a lively Q&A with Praneel Suvarna, the Student Member of the Board of Education, and we’ll enjoy uplifting music from performers Lilo Gonzalez and Munit Mesfin, as well as delicious refreshments, a silent auction, and civic arts activities for all ages. We thank Jeffrey Slavin and Margo Reid for generously co-chairing this event, and Arts on the Block for inviting us to host it in their headquarters on the ground floor of the Silver Spring library. Space is limited, so please reserve today by clicking HERE!
HOPE IS ALSO THE THEME of our GivingTuesday campaign, which kicks off this Tuesday, December 3. This year we invite you to join our “Give Hope” campaign in whatever amount feels right to you. Whether you give $500, $50, or $15, your contribution will make a material difference in our work. If you’d like to get the jump on this global day of giving right now, to help lift youth voices and prepare students to be the informed voters, helpers and leaders in their communities, please click HERE or on the Donate button below.
MANY VOICES, MANY STORIES, ONE WORLD was the theme of the National Council for the Social Studies conference in Boston this month, and The Civic Circle heard about the importance of civic learning from some of the nation’s leading historians and educators. As Harvard University professor Danielle Allen put it: “We can only have a democracy if we are ready to own and operate it.” We attended workshops on the use of hip hop, improv, music, and visual arts as civic learning tools, and The Civic Circle’s presentation on using the arts to “Bring Civics Alive in Elementary School” was well-attended and got all the teachers singing. Civic educators, said Doris Kearns Goodwin, are “on the front lines of democracy.” If you care about democracy and civic learning and would like to join our “Give Hope” campaign, please click HERE or on the Donate button below.
