OUR CIVIC SUMMER featured dance and visual arts camps focused on bridge-building (Listen!), self-expression (Speak!), and making a difference (Act!). We thank the Newburger-Schwartz Family Foundation for sponsoring a Middle School dance residency with choreographer Carolina Hernandez, who explored dance as a tool for community connection and self-expression with students in Grades 6-8. We also thank Montgomery Housing Partnership for inviting us to offer programming for these Odessa Shannon Middle School students.

The Takoma Foundation also made it possible for us to bring civic arts to students in Grades 3-5 attending Camp Piney Branch with Community CHEER. Those students worked with visual artist Kelsey Joyce to create a collaborative “Butterfly for Change” that captured themes of listening, friendship, identity, community and making the world a better place.

Next up are civic arts workshops in Wheaton with Montgomery Housing Partnership, sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, and at Oak View Elementary School, offered through the county Recreation Department’s Excel Beyond the Bell program. We extend big thanks to the sponsors and collaborators who make these programs possible!

THE CIVIC CIRCLE BOARD has been hard at work this summer promoting our work and connecting with community members at events like Bethesda Big Train Baseball, where we were honored as “Community Heroes,” and at Give a Hoot Comedy Club, where comedian Shawn Shank treated audience members to two nights of stand-up to benefit The Civic Circle. We extend thanks to Big Train and Give a Hoot for supporting The Civic Circle and other nonprofits in our community, and to all the generous donors who make this work possible.
